Placing a Hide
Placing a new geocache can be intimidating whether it is your first or your hundredth. It is recommended to have found at least 20 geocaches before placing one. When you are ready, here are some things to keep in mind:
1. Find a Good Location
Choose a safe, interesting spot on public land or with permission from the landowner. Avoid sensitive areas like schools or private property without approval. The old rule of thumb is: "When you go to hide a geocache, think of the reason you are bringing people to that spot. If the only reason is for the geocache, then find a better spot."
2. Build Your Geocache
Obtain a high quality cache container, many favorites over the years have included Tupperware containers, surplus ammo cans, and upcycled old film canisters. Cascade Cache Supply has a variety of containers with everything you need and guaranteed to impress finders and earn you favorite points.
3. Hide It Thoughtfully
Make sure it's secure and won’t be accidentally found by non-geocachers. Keep it at least 528 feet (161 meters) away from other caches.
4. Submit It Online
Go to Geocaching.com and fill out a listing with coordinates, description, and difficulty ratings. A volunteer reviewer will check it for guideline compliance. Make sure it is in place and ready to find before submitting!
5. Maintain Your Cache
You’re responsible for keeping it in good condition. Replace full logs, fix damaged containers, and respond to logs that report issues.
Basic Rules to Know:
- Get permission if placing on private or managed land.
- Caches must not be buried or contain food, explosives, or anything illegal.
- Respect the environment and local laws.
- Avoid placing caches that could be mistaken for suspicious objects.
